Maggie Duguid’s garden in Seaton Delaval, Northumberland

Seaton Delaval, Northumberland

Having acquired a plot of land in 1987, the first priority was to build a house. The remaining land, which is an unusual shape, became the garden.

Designing with a blank canvas sounds ideal, but remember your constraints – two young children (at the time) – no wind protection – a dozen or so Koi-Carp to house, and no mature plants.

All these years on the garden has matured. The pond is soothing, the fish entertaining and demanding, the greenhouse – my retreat, and the rockery a pleasure to work in.
