For dedicated shade gardeners – all the wonderful plants that not only survive, but thrive in shady conditions. Including plants that escape the shade cast by deciduous trees and shrubs by flowering and growing early in the year and those that actually tolerate it.  The first group includes springtime woodland bulbs, hepaticas, anemones, trilliums and related species and the latter includes ferns, cobra lilies and less-common woodland specialists.  Hostas hardly get a mention!

A welcome return from Peter Williams, a retired plant scientist with specialist knowledge of plant ecology, physiology and soil microbiology.   He is a lifelong gardener and for many years ran a small nursery that specialised in the propagation of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, especially those for acid soils and woodland environments.
